Public research and training centres
in Rhône-Alpes are mainly supported by Universities of Grenoble, Lyon, Saint-Etienne, Savoie, CEA/LETI, Minatec IDEAs Laboratory®, INRIA, CNRS, INPG, Ecole Normale Supérieure, INSA Lyon, Centrale Lyon, ESRF, Pôle optique-vision, Schools
of Graphics Art (Gobelins, Emile Cohl), etc.

Public research is carried out in more than 50 laboratories and employs some 6,000 people working in numerous IT fields. The latter are strongly involved in European and International projects.

Private research and training centers,
such as those at Crolles 2 (ST Microelectronics, Freescale Semiconductors and Philips Semiconductors), France Telecom R&D, HP Lab, Inovatel, Sun Microsystems (International Center for Network Computing), Minatec IDEAs Laboratory®, Xerox Research Center Europe develop advanced applied research for their own needs as well as for international and industrial projects.
